D'Annunzio's literary creations were strongly influenced by the French Symbolist school, and contain episodes of striking violence and depictions of abnormal mental states interspersed with gorgeously imagined scenes. He wrote the screenplay to the feature film Cabiria (1914) based on episodes from the Second Punic War. Three weeks into its December 1901 run at the Teatro Constanzi in Rome, his tragedy Francesca da Rimini was banned by the censor on grounds of morality.Ī prolific writer, his novels in Italian include Il piacere ( The Child of Pleasure, 1889), Il trionfo della morte ( The Triumph of Death, 1894), and Le vergini delle rocce ( The Virgins of the Rocks, 1896). An 1898 New York Times review of his novel The Intruder referred to him as "evil", "entirely selfish and corrupt". Indeed, even before his fascist period, he had his strong detractors. Although his work had immense impact across Europe, and influenced generations of Italian writers, his fin de siècle works are now little known, and his literary reputation has always been clouded by his fascist associations. At the height of his success, d'Annunzio was celebrated for the originality, power and decadence of his writing.

With his friend and fellow psychologist Rachel Heller, Levine wrote Attached, a practical guide to harnessing adult attachment theory to find lasting love, described by its authors as “the manual we wish we’d had when we were dating”. No Fear picks up a year or more after Conquest ended with the close of Jesse and Evan’s worldwide tour. While I’m not sure I’ll continue with any more books by this author, if you liked Conquest, you may want to continue with the series. It’s almost as if I had expected these issues to change and I soon realized this is very likely the author’s style. No Fear reads extremely close to the original Conquest with the same writing style, same horrendous head hopping, same overly wordy and extraneous details, but this time around I found myself getting annoyed with these problems. Unfortunately I couldn’t forgive those issues a second time around as easily as I could in the first book. What’s interesting about No Fear is that all the problems in the first book are still here in the second book. When I read Conquest last year, I liked it a lot despite its many problems. Sequels are always an interesting animal. However, despite (or perhaps because of) the familiar romantic plot and over-the-top elements, Twilight proved a huge success with its target audiences of teens and spawned a quartet of sequels in New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn Parts 1 and 2. Directed by Lords of Dogtown helmer Catherine Hardwicke, Twilight was dismissed by critics (and even its own star Robert Pattinson) due to the cornier aspects of the movie’s melodramatic love story of an immortal vampire, Edward Cullen, and his small-town teenage love interest, series protagonist Bella Swan. |
